A Professional's Guide to Printing on Washable Kraft Paper
Branding washable kraft paper requires a different approach than standard canvas. Because the material is textured and crinkles over time, standard plastisol inks can crack.
In this guide, we explore the two best methods for branding this unique material: Debossing (Hot Stamping) for a subtle, premium leather-like look, and Water-Based Screen Printing for high-contrast visibility that moves with the fabric.
Quick Branding Guide
- Debossing: Best for "Leather" look. Permanent, tactile, premium.
- Screen Printing: Best for Logos. Water-based ink only.
- Embroidery: Not Recommended. Perforates/weakens fiber.
- Digital Print: Limited. Can look like a sticker; proceed with caution.
Debossing vs. Screen Printing
| Feature | Debossing (Hot Stamp) | Screen Printing |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Subtle, Darker Tone, 3D Depth | High Contrast Color, Flat |
| Durability | Permanent (Cannot fade) | High (Fades to vintage look) |
| Best For | Logos, patterns, "Leather" vibe | Text, Complex Art, multiple colors |
| Cost | Mold Fee ($50-$100) | Screen Setup ($30) |
Deep Dive: Printing Techniques
1. Debossing (Hot Stamping)
The Premium Choice. Just like on real leather, we use a heated metal die to press your logo into the material. The heat slightly darkens the paper fibers, creating a beautiful tone-on-tone effect.
- Tactile: You can feel the logo indented into the bag.
- Permanent: It will never wash off, peel, or crack.
- Limitations: Cannot do fine details (under 10pt font) or specific colors (it's heat-burnished).
2. Water-Based Screen Printing
The Ink Matters. Standard plastisol (rubber) ink sits *on top* of the fabric. When kraft paper wrinkles (which it does!), plastisol will crack. We use water-based inks that soak *into* the fiber.
- Soft Hand: The print feels like part of the paper, not a plastic sticker.
- Vintage Aging: As you wash the bag, the ink fades slightly with the paper, enhancing the vintage aesthetic.
- Colors: We can match PMS colors, but they may appear slightly more muted on the textured surface.
3. Why We Don't Recommend Embroidery
Structural Integrity. While possible, embroidery involves punching thousands of needle holes into the material. On fabric, the threads close back up. On paper (even washable paper), these holes remain.
- Perforation: Dense embroidery acts like a "tear here" stamp, weakening the bag.
- Water Resistance: The holes compromise the water-resistant barrier.
- Alternative: If you need an embroidered look, we recommend sewing a woven patch onto the bag instead.
Printing FAQ
It is difficult. Digital transfer can work but often looks like a sticker. For complex art, we recommend a sewn-on printed patch.
Not recommended. Embroidery needles punch thousands of holes, effectively perforating the paper (like a stamp). This weakens the structural integrity.
Yes! We often print custom patterns on the cotton or polyester lining inside the bag for a surprise detail.
Over time, yes, causing a 'vintage' distressed look. This is often desired. Debossing never fades.
Yes. Foil stamping works, but because the surface is textured/wrinkled, the foil may not be perfectly smooth like on a business card.
We recommend 10pt bold or larger. Thin serifs get lost in the paper's texture.
Yes. We have 50+ colors of cotton webbing and PU leather options for handles.
Yes. We can sew your brand's care label inside every bag. This is standard for B2B orders.
Yes, for orders over 3,000 yards. Below that, you must choose from our stock colors (Tan, Black, Grey, Brown, Olive, White).
Typically $50 - $100 depending on size. It is a one-time fee; we keep the mold for re-orders.
Yes, screen printing can be done on any panel before assembly, including the bottom gusset.
Always. We provide a digital proof (PDF) showing size and position before we start any metalwork or screen making.
